TINTES 2021

I did not know that we had to prepare a summer project until a few days ago, so I prepared a work that I did this year in Spain with a friend.

It's an Installation with a concept video that talks about the oil industry and how this affects nature.

TINTAS (2021). Sandra Balaguer y Nuria Suarez.

Consist on a projection of different types of landscapes on nine “bidets” or also known as sinks.

In the video, the projections are being destroyed by using Chinese ink that prevents the light from the projection from reflecting off the white background of the sink.

This work is based on the text by Omar Ernesto Cano Ramírez that talks about the change in geological history caused by human activities. He affirms that understanding the climate crisis as a factor of human activity without taking into account the economic factor would be a serious mistake, and therefore, at the point that society is currently at, it is better to speak about the Capitalocene concept.

The Capitalocene, as its name indicates, expresses that fossilism and resource depletion are part of the basis of the capitalist economic system that drives the production of goods on a large scale in the shortest possible time. In addition, it establishes groups with greater power to create productive and consumer dynamics through legal, political, religious, psychological and military means.

Taking into account the economic distribution, privileges and unequal power produced by this system, the climate crisis is not a consequence of the majority of the population or of the individual - as established in the Anthropocene, but rather the blame falls on the wealthy sectors, business and government policies. To direct the sustainable discourse to the poorest sectors is to contribute to not worrying about the problem, supporting the capitalist system.

In this context of extreme inequality, the climate and ecological crisis has very different effects for each person, the most affected are the most marginalized and low-income social groups. But the elite do not care about the death of some as long as it is not them.

The idea came from reading this mentioned text, where you can also read data from the most polluting industrial sectors: oil and cement companies, which between 1751 and 2010, only 90 corporations of this type emitted 53% of the total gases greenhouse effect accumulated.

Oil activity is one of the industries that generates the most environmental and biodiversity impacts locally and globally.

So basically I thought about bringing the outside problems such as “global warming, oil industry, tree felling… to the inside of the home, making this problem seen from a more personal and intimate perspective.
